             Woman Composers and under-represented Composers

There is no doubt that "music" is often used to cultivate beauty, educate people, and a tool for raising humanity in Chinese and Western education. It is also a cultural product under the growth of society in any period, and it also reflects the pipeline of values and group thinking. The content of music reflects the social, political, artistic, and cultural development at that time. One thing which is equally important to the above mentioned is women always are labeled because of their gender—no matter where and which era. The problem of neglected music by female composers is ongoing.

As a matter of fact, the music historian's records showed that female musicians and composers have always emerged one after another. Their music has yet to be discovered, promoted, and underestimated by future generations. The rise of feminism has led female musicians to actively seek gender equality and continue to seek improvements in the differential treatment and problems faced by male and female musician’s pipeline. In today's situation, where all countries in the world attach importance to women's rights, female musicians have gained more opportunities to show their creative and performance skills in music. They can protect themselves through many gender equality laws related to feminism. Feminism and related movements have promoted female musicians' status in the twentieth century. They can get rid of the fate of always relying on male musicians in the past and elevate from a secondary social status to independent and expressive, creative, and talented musicians.

Tania León

Saoko (Brass Quintet)

From my perspective, the composition of this brass quintet is full of creativity, the variety of sound changes and part of the improvisation bring this piece to a whole new world.

Origenes (2012)

Marti Epstein

L'homme Armé (Brass Quintet)

From my perspective, I feel the whole composition is more like minimal music, which has limited music material of the works. The interpretation of the piece needs to have dramatic dynamic changes to get the diversity of the sound.

THE FIVE CHAIRS (Brass Quintet,1990); commissioned by the New England Brass Quintet.

Anthony Barfield

Invictus (Brass Ensemble)

From my perspective, the composition is well-written that showed the variety of the music material.

It makes me feel that musicians tried to survive in the pandemic, just like rejoicing in hope, patient in tribulation.

GRAVITY (Brass Quintet)

Libby Larson

Fanfare for a Learned Man (Brass Quintet)

From my perspective, the melodic line of the composition is fascinating and smooth that demonstrates each instrument's characteristics well. Although it is not a challenging piece, the atmosphere of the work is harmonious.

Brazen Overture (Brass Quintet,2000)

 Thea Musgrave

 Variations for Brass Band

The Voices of Our Ancestors (2014)

Florence Anna Maunders

From my perspective, the composition must mean a lot to the composer. The variety of rhythmic changes and call and response musical phrases in between is interesting.
